What Does it Mean to Give?

Today marks the seventh annual Global Day of Giving, also known as #GivingTuesday. Held on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, and after all the chaos of Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping, this global movement encourages us to give.

But what does it really mean to give?

“to present voluntarily and without expecting compensation”

From my perspective, to give is to offer wholeheartedly without the expectation of receiving in return or exchange of your gesture.

Such a powerful action. It makes the heart warm and grows with kindness… not just for others… but for yourself. Giving is a great way to build self-love. It can lift your spirits even in your darkest moments.

As per Givingtuesday.org, #GivingTuesday was founded in 2012 by the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact. Connecting individuals, communities and organizations around the globe, this movement brings everyone together solely for the purpose of giving. Over the past five years, in over 71 countries, 45,000 corporate and nonprofit organizations have contributed to this initiative.

Social media empowers this special day. Encourage and join in this movement by sharing how you give today, remembering how even small acts of kindness can make all the difference to others.
