A Clean Mat is a Happy Mat As a regular Bikram Yoga Student, I know a thing or two about stinky Yoga Mats. So after hours of sweating and putting your dirty feet all over your Yoga Mat, here's a few tips to help you make sure that you don't have the "smelly mat" in class:
- After class, don't roll your mat up and put it away. Instead, leave your mat flat to allow it to fully dry. Rolling your mat up immediately after class traps odors, germs, and bacteria inside of it that won't be let out until the next time you use your mat.
- If your Yoga Mat smells bad, I suggest using Stirlen Chi Mat Cleanser or Yoga Mat Wipes. Stirlen Chi is a biodegradable, non-toxic cleanser made of essential oils, so it not only lightly scents your mat, but it preserves the life of your mat as well.
- If your Yoga Mat is very soiled, the best thing to do it drop it in a tub full of warm water and give it a good cleaning with either Stirlen Chi mat wash, or a small bit of any kind of grease-cutting dish soap. If you do end up using soap, make sure that you get all of the soap washed off your mat, otherwise you may find your mat to be a little slippery the next time you use it. After you take your mat out of the tub, wring it out, hang it up, and let it dry.
Cleaning and refreshing your Yoga Mat will preserve the life of your mat as well as the quality of your Yoga practice.
